- Namesake: John was named for the other two machines that existed with it, Odie and Garfield. In the cartoon "Garfield and Friends" John Arbuckle is the "owner" of Garfield and Odie. In my network, John was the firewall/central network backbone and filehost between systems.
John was the first "my" computer that I got. It was a retired "family" computer that I took over when it had Windows 95 on it. After having my system go haywire on Windows 98, and losing a lot of information that I did not have backed up, I was rather frustrated and moved to Linux. Thus I found out how easy it was to run a server, and that brought me to the world I am now in. John served me as a desktop and then a server, and it wasn't until December 2005 that John was retired. Partially due to the inability to upgrade anymore (old motherboard), and because Schezuan had entered the mix as a new 'available-to-serve' machine.
