Prepared 06/12/2008 Installing NetBSD on your mips-based cobalt. This is the procedure as I did for my raq2 machines. Download the rescue/restore CD: http://pub.dayid.org/NetBSD/cobalt/ Boot into rescue 386 CD on a spare machine that is not on a network. Connect your cobalt via a crossover cable or switch. Boot the cobalt with Net Booting, on my raq2 this is done by holding the left and right arrow buttons on the front face while booting. The LCD will display NetBooting. The disk will partition, install, etc, NetBSD automatically and then restart once completed. telnet into the machine (mine received IP 10.0.0.160 from the rescue CD, your experience may differ, but it should be displayed on the LCD anyways) as root with no password. From here, hopefully configure your network, make a root password, add a regular user, enable ssh, disable telnet, and enjoy! Appended 2008/12/20: If you would like to attach with the serial cable, you will need to make sure the terminal is set to be on (by holding the reset button while powering on the device). Then configure minicom or your favourite serial program as: Bps/Par/Bits: 115200 8N1 Hardware Flow Control: No Software Flow Control: No
